Sorry this is so late today. I got distracted because I downloaded Roots Magic Essentials to see what the program was like and ended up playing around with it and FamilySearch FamilyTree for at least 2 hours after church. I just realized I hadn’t updated this list and it was Sunday!

This is the list of projects that are currently in the download lists.

For those who just want to see the spreadsheet it’s here

http://libraryoffamilysearchindexinfo.freeforums.org/projects-percentages-completed-t86.html

or the original FS page is here https://indexing.familysearch.org/rss?listType=projectspage

The percentage number in () brackets is the whole percentage that the project went up from last time.

Just got the email from FSI covering a few different things. remarks in {} are from me ;)

Here's the whole thing for those who maybe didn't get it.

Preserving History in the Midst of Natural Disaster

The small city of L’Aquila, Italy, shook during a large earthquake on April 6, 2009. As the epicenter of the earthquake, much of the L’Aquila area was destroyed, and many were killed. The walls and roof of the L’Aquila archive collapsed on its ancient records, and the archivists rushed in during the aftershocks to save them. The archivists felt an urgency to preserve the records and partnered with FamilySearch to digitally preserve and index the records online. You can help preserve the L’Aquila records. When downloading a batch to index at FamilySearch.org/indexing, look for the current project Italia (Antenati Italiani), L'Aquila e Rieti—Stato Civile 1809–1828 [Parte1].

These interesting facts pertain to the L’Aquila project:

· The L’Aquila project includes birth, marriage, and death records.

· The project’s records range from 1809 to 1865.

· With every birth record, you will also find a baptism record.

One of the more difficult fields in this record is the surnames, particularly the mother’s last name. There are many helpful resources available for this project on familysearch.org/Italian-ancestors. The Italian Surnames by Region is a great tool to help you find and compare the correct surname spelling. When using this tool for the L’Aquila project, choose Abruzzi for the correct region and spelling.

Arbitrating Jamaica Civil Marriages and Deaths 1871-1995 Part B today

To contact us Click HERE

So far today I’m going to work on arbitrating Jamaica Civil Marriages and Deaths 1871-1995 Part B since it’s the lowest percentage complete in my personal spreadsheet list today.

Okay noticed something in the first batch… The use of “or” was incorrectly done.

The one indexer used or 3 times in between the surname for the same person (they put 3 different variations of the surname) but there was only one time the surname appeared on the image. “Or” is only to be used if there’s more than one time the surname is on the image and it’s spelled differently. If you can’t read the writing then use ? or * not “Or”.

If a father’s name is not on the image you can’t index the surname from the child or the siblings that were present at the death. You’re assuming that is the father’s surname. What if that child went by the mother’s surname? You don’t know cause the information is not on the image. That’s up to the researcher to “research” and find out. We’re there as indexers to transcribe the information on the image only.

Also make sure and read the wording around the person’s name that is present at the death. I see indexers putting the brother / son / grandfather’s names in the father’s name fields all the time. That’s not the correct information and should not be indexed.

With the death records when there’s an individual and they have say “Smith otherwise Larson” after the given name it’s not indexed as “Smith Larson” unless there’s some indication that Smith is the maiden name and Larson is the married name. It should be indexed as “Smith or Larson”. On these records most of the times it’s indicating an alias, also known as or AKA. Now if the individual was female (which in most of these cases I’m seeing they’re not) and the father’s name was present or sometimes the spouse’s name, then you can maybe determine that the name’s are maiden / married names.

Otherwise the indexers are doing quite well on the project compared to the previous Part A where we saw continual problems with the page number and record number.

After I wrote that I noticed something on the next batch… always check the column labelled “Signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant.” in that column you can usually find the name of the mother, father or spouse listed. This indexer missed the mother’s name there.

Marine Sgt. on Cross-Country Run Stops in New Mexico “The Run for Veterans” 3,600 Mile Journey Aimed atCalling Attention to/Raising Money for Post-Combat Veterans’ Issues

New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services Secretary Timothy Hale presenting a state Flag to Brendan O'Toole  in front of the Eternal Flame Monument at the Bataan Memorial Building in Santa Fe.

A Marine Sergeant on a cross-country run to help call attention to veterans’ issues has stopped in New Mexico for a few days—catching his breath and visiting with New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary Timothy Hale before heading back on the road.

24-year old Brendan O’Toole—a native of Alexandria, Virginia—began The Run for Veterans last Veterans’ Day  from Oceanside, California (near Camp Pendleton just north of San Diego) on a 3,600-mile journey to Portland, Maine. His goal is to finish sometime near the end of the year and to raise $2 million for to help Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans.
O’Toole served two tours with the Marines; first in Haiti and Somalia, and then Afghanistan—finishing his second tour last spring. It was here during “down time” while watching the movie Forrest Gump--the Oscar-winning movie starring Tom Hanks about a Marine who ran across the country after serving in Vietnam--that the seed was planted  to one day do the same. When O’Toole returned home to Virginia, he began noticing that a lot of friends who also served in Afghanistan and Iraq were having a hard time re-adjusting to “normal” civilian life.
“For whatever reason, a lot of my friends were not handling their new lives very well,” explained O’Toole when meeting with NMDVS Secretary Hale to explain his mission. ”They were abusing alcohol or drugs, tuning people out—just having a lot of personal issues going on.”
O’Toole had also decided to take up running to “de-compress” after his latest tour in Afghanistan. When one of his ex-combat friends who had been having a particularly difficult time readjusting to life back home committed suicide, O’Toole recalled a promise he made to that friend:  Running across the country “like what Forrest Gump did.”
O’ Toole found his new post-military mission: A cross-country run--not only to see the sights—but with a purpose: Calling attention to the need to help our newest generation of veterans cope with life after service
He created a website to solicit pledges—with all money after gas, food and lodging expenses are deducted going to three agencies which provide physical, mental and social support for soldiers and veterans: Give an Hour; Team Red, White & Blue; and the USO.
“The respect for military service and veterans is amazing here in New Mexico,” said O’Toole. "Only three weeks into this, I think I have noticed that the farther you get our from the cities, the more in-tune people are with military members. It almost seems like outside of the cities is the heart of America."

US Pennsylvania Philadelphia Passenger List Project today

To contact us Click HERE

Okay so I’ve been working on the US Pennsylvania Philadelphia Passenger Lists which are the highest priority for me for arbitrating today.

Here’s some of the things indexers are messing up:

  • 6 batches returned to be finished for not indexing the crossed out names belonging to the ship whether crossed out or not are to be indexed.
  • 3 batches returned because the indexer didn’t finish the batch. There were more than 10 records on it. Someone needs to learn how to add records for this project. For those who are going to ask… no I’m not finishing their work for them. It’s not my job. Indexers can read the rules and learn the project just like everyone else who does these correctly. If they can’t they shouldn’t be indexing. Stakes and Groups shouldn’t be pushing members to index when they don’t understand it or have no interest in it. Numbers are not the important part… quality is.
  • Next batch… for Nationality / Place of Birth field you type what is written. US America is just that not America. Do not expand abbreviations. If there’s an abbreviation with periods like U.S.A. then it’s indexed as U S A if it didn’t have the periods and no spaces then put it as USA. Periods mean a space.
  • Next batch… sent it back for another arbitrator to do. I couldn’t even read it properly.
  • 3 batches… yah! only spelling differences!
  • 2 batches put in genders when the column was left blank. No genders in column then mark the fields Ctrl+B for Blank. Do not type blank in the field either please!
  • 1 batch - Do not include titles with the names. We are not indexing titles in this project. Titles include: Mr, Mrs, Miss, Master
  • 2 batches - If infant is written in the age column instead of 0 then we use Ctrl+B and mark it blank. Infant can be anyone up to the age of adulthood. Most cultures it’s up to age 18.
  • 1 batch - Do not expand names such as Wm D is not William D leave it abbreviated. How do you know that Wm is William? What if it was Wilhelm?
  • 2 batches - Do not include S.S. with the ship name.
