Just so everyone knows I DO NOT support the looking up of individual’s names on online sites to verify what is on an indexing document.
Online sites are not a good reference for looking up individual names to compare. Those online sites are not reliable. There’s no guarantee another document is reliable. Not only do other indexers who have done the work before that you’re looking up make mistakes but the clerks themselves made mistakes.
Follow the rules of indexing:
If you have a problem reading a name then start using * for multiple letters and ? for 1 letter.
If you have a problem with reading the whole document then send it back for another indexer to work on if you are stressed about getting a low percentage. There’s no penalty for sending it back. Just don’t submit it instead. Quite a few indexers do that accidently as well.
So again I DO NOT support this on my blog and DO NOT support it on the Library of FamilySearch Indexing Information Forums. Anyone who posts on the forums about looking up individuals names on online sites are doing so without the support of the forums. It’s their own opinion on how things should be done and is not supported by FamilySearch either.
The only thing that is supported and related to this is the looking up of locations when the project instructions allow it. Looking up of locations is recommended and supported by this blog, the Library forums and FamilySearch Indexing.
