Arbitrated batches for June 23, 2012

To contact us Click HERE

Working on arbitration batches while sitting here at work waiting for trips to come down to us.

My one account I’m working on 1940 Census and here’s what I’ve found wrong.

Batch #1

  • Both indexers not watching  their auto fill (or lack there of).  Instead of double checking  their work they both put S in for Son instead of completing the word.  Okay that was just for 1 line later on the one indexer did notice  their mistake and started fixing it.
  • If Same House or Same Place are in the column 17 Residence in 1935 field then you blank both fields for columns 18 and 19.  Do not enter county or state information in these cases.  Both indexers did this.

Batch #2

  • Watch the line numbers.   If it’s sheet A then the lines should be 1 to 40.  If it’s sheet B then they should be 41 to 80.  They’re on both sides of the page so you shouldn’t be able to miss them.

Well that’s what I had so far.  Got distracted by trips at work and couldn’t do indexing for a couple hours Smilewhich is good cause that means I’m making $!!!

5 Million Names Goal for #FamilySearch Indexing for July 2, 2012

To contact us Click HERE
If you haven 't heard FamilySearch Indexing is pushing for the 5 million names indexed goal for July 2, 2012 in a 24 hour period.

Here's what has been suggested in the FSI forums (https://www.familysearch.org/learn/forums/en/showthread.php?t=16630#post64442), please push these things to your indexers / arbitrators if you're in a group:

  • Ask all to read the project updates to prepare, perhaps even post a link to the page for the project updates.
  • Ask all to browse this forum to prepare....there may be tens of thousands who do not even know this forum exist so please post a link.  https://www.familysearch.org/learn/forums/en/forumdisplay.php?f=36
  • Ask all to re-read the entire field helps to prepare.
  • Ask all to forward these request to everyone in their groups to do the same.

Here’s the batches I’m working on today.

1940 census

Batch #1

  • Indexer blanked all residence fields where Same House or Same Place was written in.  Index Same House or Same Place if written in.
  • If you’re not sure of a spelling of a location look it up.  The lookup lists are not always correct either or they can have multiple spellings of locations which doesn’t mean one is wrong, sometimes that just means there’s a city spelled the two different ways in more than one state.  The lookups are the same for most of the 1940 census projects.  Use sites such as Google or http://www.hometownlocator.com to verify if you’re not sure.  For example it’s not Centerville, Virginia it’s Centreville, Virginia.  Both are in the lookup.
  • Watch your auto fill. If you type too fast it won’t complete the word before you hit enter.

Batch #2 – This one looks like it’s going to be a doozy!  Red galore!

  • Don’t use leading zeros.  1 is 1 not 01, 2 is 2 not 02.
  • Middle names are not Title and terms.  They are given names.  Index them with the First name.
  • Relationships – If it’s written Wife then index Wife not W.  Complete the words written.
  • If Washington DC is in the birth field then it’s indexed as “Washington District of Columbia” not just Washington or Washington DC.  We are to expand abbreviations and type all that is written in the field starting with the lowest location which means city, county, state then country if given.
  • If the next line in a family doesn’t have a household number and the household has not changed we are to type the previous household number from the Head of the household.
  • If the next line in a family doesn’t have a surname and the enumerator used a line for ditto or left it blank we are to type in the surname from the previous line.
  • Starting to think this batch the Indexer B was a brand new indexer.
  • X in a circle is not a title / term.  It meant that that individual was the one to give the enumerator the information.  Just ignore circles with x’s.
  • Do not index “ab” if it’s after a name.  It meant that individual was absent at the time.

Well I think this is where I’m going to end this post today.  Got some things to run around and do before heading out of town tomorrow to get the commercial inspection on the van done.   That and that 2nd batch seemed to cover all the rules (or almost all) for the project.

My indexed batches in Arbitration Review for today:

UK Dorset Parish Records

  • Okay someone’s working on this ADVANCED project that should not be.  They’re a beginner arbitrator.  How do I know this?  Arbitrators who have been doing this long enough know NOT TO TYPE the word BLANK in a field.   Marked for review.

Ohio County Marriages

  • Are you kidding me?  5 extra blank records added in after the 16th record!  Definitely marked for review.  Only add the amount of records that you need.  If you don’t know how to remove the other indexers blank records after the last ones in an arbitration batch then quit arbitrating or go re-take the arbitration tutorial.
  • Other than that a couple of the years changed to the incorrect date so I marked those for review.

1940 Census South Dakota

  • Difference in opinion between me and the arb on what is a ditto mark.  Marked for review.
  • Almost forgot that blank batches are now marked with ? in review.  Then remembered 2 of the batches I did today were blanks.  Slight brain fart there.

Arbitration Done by Me Today May 30 2012 #familysearch

Arbitration today:

UK Derbyshire Parish Records

  • 2 batches: Do not assume child’s name in the christenings from the parents.
  • 2 batches: Do not assume gender if one is not directly listed or a relationship such as son / daughter / wife / husband is not listed.

I usually do not lookup names of people.  I always try and type what I see.  Other lookup sources for names especially censuses are not all 1st hand sources and should not be totally relied upon.  How do you know that this record you are indexing right now isn’t the correct spelling and the others are all incorrect?  When arbitrating I will look up some names if I really cant make a decision between what Indexer A and B have chosen and I can’t see anything different.  In those cases then I only use FamilySearch.

Looking up names of places / locations well that’s different and I do do that.

From that link above for anyone else reading this:

When a document contains crossed out or corrected information, we index the information based on certain criteria:

  • When information is crossed out and the clerk wrote replacement data, type the new data into the appropriate fields.
  • When information is crossed out and not replaced but you can read what was crossed out, type in the crossed-out information.
  • When the information is crossed out, not replaced, and cannot be read, mark the field as <Unreadable> by pressing Ctrl+U.
  • When every entry on a record cannot be read, mark the entire record as <Unreadable> by pressing Ctrl+Shift+U.

Okay I’ve got all the English Projects in a spreadsheet with their number of images left to index so I know how many batches are left approximately.  Or it’s usually easy enough to figure out.  Been choosing arbitration batches by the this number of images left.  So basically I’ve been choosing projects that are almost completed so they get done and out there for the researchers.

Been working on Texas Deaths today.  The batches for arbitration on the Texas deaths lately have been 1 image only.  Indexers are marking them duplicate when they can not be duplicate if there’s only 1 image.

That and they’re assuming information that isn’t there.  Certificate numbers taken from other images, putting in marriage status when its clearly not marked, assuming that they index the state for birth field if only a city or county is on the image.

Get em in their Dress Blues and things get even wilder ...So just for curiosity again, I looked at the other armed forces ...Lets just say, well, dance, dance, danceI guess it's universal. But clearly the Marines do it best. Finally, one from the history screen ... Those from Marine's India Co. boot camp who chose MOIs of Infantry are still in their Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The families of those young men report it is difficult and the battalion has quite a few who "don't make it." There were 249 to start and now are 193 left.
The mission is: "To train and provide proficient, MOS qualified Infantrymen to the Fleet Marine Force, Marine Security Forces and Marine Force Reserve."

SOI East
The first three weeks you learn what all basic Grunts must know. The M67 fragmentary grendades, the M203 grenade launcher, the M249 SAW, and you will spent some time getting to use the AN/PVS 14B night vision goggles. You will also learn Basic combat formations, patrolling, hand and arm signals, Field craft(how to live right in the field), the correct way to pack a pack. (the bootcamp way is just craming things in tight as hell.) how to understand 5 paragraph orders. and a whole lot of humps....

Once your 3 week is training is up, you will be split off into actual MOSs like 0311 rifleman, 0331 machinegunner, 0341 mortorman, 0351 assualtman.
The whole thing ends with one giant illuminated night attack, combined arms range, with your old buddies the Machine gunners and mortarmen in support. youll assault those evil Ivan target bastards with Machineguns cracking over your head, and Mortars providing constant illumination. Its serrious buisness, but to be honnest it was alot of fun.

Marine Traits: Dependability

To contact us Click HERE
"Ability without dependability has no value."
Leadership

So I came across these traits and I'm doing the third one first because, that's the first one I came across. But it is a good one so go J.J. DID TIE BUCKLE!

The third Marine Corps leadership trait Dependability, which means, “You can be relied upon to perform your duties properly. It means that you can be trusted to complete a job. It is the willing and voluntary support of the policies and orders of the chain of command. Dependability also means consistently putting forth your best effort in an attempt to achieve the highest standards of performance.” Marines blog

I am finding that these traits are used often as examples in the business world and that beyond the basic definition, Marines are encouraged to contemplate for themselves what the words mean. Interesting for an organization that supposedly tells its members what to think to be telling them to think for themselves. Pretty cool.

From an education website about a school lesson on dependability:

Students explained that they believed being dependable meant that you were trustworthy, honest, and did what you said you were going to do.  We discussed who in their lives were dependable and they concluded that their parents, some friends, and some teachers were dependable in that they could count on these people to care about and for them.  We discussed the difference between friends and acquaintances and how dependable each one of those categories of people were.  They decided, overwhelming that a few friends were very dependable but in all cases it depended on the situation.  I asked them if they thought that they were dependable people and the majority thought that they were. Character Education
So in the world of Marines, one would hope one's partners, fellow Marines are more dependable than friends, teacher and even parents. I wonder what a similar discussion with Marines would yield.

FamilySearch Indexing User Guide on Name Variations located here https://help.familysearch.org/help/viewdocument?documentId=cfsinamevariationshtml&sliceId=&userQuery=%22or%22

A name variation or alias is an assumed or additional name. AKA means “also known as” and indicates another name the person was known by.

Variations

If you see variations of a name listed in the record, type both versions separating them with the word “or.” For example,
Frederico or Francis
Elisabeth or Elizabeth
Millett or Millet
Aliases or AKA

To index a name that has one or more aliases or uses an AKA, type the word or between each name.

For example, if an individual’s name is listed as “Joseph Broski AKA Joseph Browzowski AKA Jozef Brzozowski,” you would type the following:

Given Name: Joseph or Jozef

Surname: Broski or Brozowski or Brzozowski

US Illinois WWI Draft Registration Project

To contact us Click HERE

Okay so I’ve changed my tactic again a little.  Been trying to find a project that I actually want to work on.

So it’s Illinois WWI Draft Registrations right now.  Mostly cause it’s got the most images / batches and is the least done.

Here’s some hints for the US WWI Draft Registration Projects..

  • Cards are usually alphabetical by surname
  • Just cause a field goes red doesn’t mean it’s wrong
  • You’ll have to lookup place names a lot
  • There’s a lot of foreign place names (refer to previous point)
  • For the Card Type 3 (the one with no actual birth location spot on the image) do not index the city / county fields.
  • If card states “Natural Born” “Natural Born Citizen” or the Natural Born box is checked then their Country of birth is United States.
  • Do Not abbreviate USA.  It should be written out as United States.

Always expand abbreviations if you know what they mean.  Don’t index USA as just that expand it to United States.  This keeps things uniform and helps the researcher better find the records.  Most don’t search for USA abbreviated.  I wouldn’t.

Remember also during this time Poland was not an independent republic, it was a state or kingdom of various countries.  It fought over by Russia / Austria / Hungary / Germany until the end of 1918.  It became independent after World War I.

Spelling of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for #1940Census #familysearch

To contact us Click HERE
Just doing some Pennsylvania 1940 Federal Census and had to lookup the spelling of Pittsburgh, enumerator spelled it Pittsburg which is wrong for the time period.

"Pittsburgh was officially named with its present spelling on April 22, 1794, by an act of the Pennsylvania Department, stating, "Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, that the said town of Pittsburgh shall be, and the same is hereby, erected into a borough, which shall be called the borough of Pittsburgh for ever."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh

So anything after 1794 for indexing Pittsburgh should be spelled with a h on the end.  The lookup list for the 1940 Census is therefore wrong for spelling.  Really wish they'd do their history lessons sometimes before making up these lookup lists.  Or fix them.

J.J. DID TIE BUCKLE or Marine leadership traits

To contact us Click HERE
Sorry it's been so long, had some computer issues and life is moving forward way too fast. My Marine will be going in October to be stationed in 29 Palms, California. Keep watching, info on that coming soon.

These leadership traits can be found on numerous business and civilian Websites as examples of how to be a good leader, USMC first.

Marine Corps Leadership Traits
The 14 leadership traits are qualities of thought and action which, if demonstrated in daily activities, help Marines earn the respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation of other Marines. It is extremely important that you understand the meaning of each leadership trait and how to develop it, so you know what goals to set as you work to become a good leader and a good follower.

JUSTICE
Justice is defined as the practice of being fair and consistent. A just person gives consideration to each side of a situation and bases rewards or punishments on merit.

JUDGMENT
Judgment is your ability to think about things clearly, calmly, and in an orderly fashion so that you can make good decisions.

DEPENDABILITY
Dependability means that you can be relied upon to perform your duties properly. It means that you can be trusted to complete a job. It is the willing and voluntary support of the policies and orders of the chain of command. Dependability also means consistently putting forth your best effort in an attempt to achieve the highest standards of performance.

INITIATIVE
Initiative is taking action even though you haven't been given orders. It means meeting new and unexpected situations with prompt action. It includes using resourcefulness to get something done without the normal material or methods being available to you.

DECISIVENESS
Decisiveness means that you are able to make good decisions without delay. Get all the facts and weight them against each other. By acting calmly and quickly, you should arrive at a sound decision. You announce your decisions in a clear, firm, professional manner.

TACT
Tact means that you can deal with people in a manner that will maintain good relations and avoid problems. It means that you are polite, calm, and firm.

INTEGRITY
Integrity means that you are honest and truthful in what you say or do. You put honesty, sense of duty, and sound moral principles above all else.

Physical courage means that you can continue to function effectively when there is physical danger present.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is the understanding of a science or art. Knowledge means that you have acquired information and that you understand people. Your knowledge should be broad, and in addition to knowing your job, you should know your unit's policies and keep up with current events.

LOYALTY
Loyalty means that you are devoted to your country, the Corps, and to your seniors, peers, and subordinates. The motto of our Corps is Semper Fidelis!, (Always Faithful). You owe unwavering loyalty up and down the chain of command, to seniors, subordinates, and peers.

ENDURANCE
Endurance is the mental and physical stamina that is measured by your ability to withstand pain, fatigue, stress, and hardship. For example, enduring pain during a conditioning march in order to improve stamina is crucial in the development of leadership.
Because it is important to always be able to remember the basic leadership traits, the acronym "J.J. DID TIE BUCKLE" is used. Each letter in the acronym corresponds to the first letter of one of the traits. By remembering the acronym, you will be better able to recall the traits.

Marine ranks

Hmmm, I think I lost a post somewhere. Well it's been a crazy few weeks, I can't believe it's been so long since I posted. I'm sorry. My Marine has been promoted a level to Private First Class (Sept. 1, 2011) and has that little thingy on his clothes now. next Wednesday he graduates from his MOS and Thursday gets on an airplane to his permanent duty station at 29 Palms, California.

Some of the other recruits received the PFC designation in boot camp already, This can only happen under very special circumstances: If you were an Eagle Scout, in High School JROTC or had Prior Service in the military. You can also get it meritoriously out of boot camp if you are an excellent recruit. Or two referrals in the DEP, as a platoon honor grad, over 15 credit hours of college, or are in the top 10 percent in your series. leatherneck
Anyway, whatever the timing, I am still ridiculously proud of my fabulous Marine son!
Bravo Team MTICUp up and on the way:
"In the United States Marine Corps, the rank of Private First Class is the second lowest, just under Lance Corporal and just above Private, equivalent to NATO Grade OR-2, being pay grade E-2. It was established in 1917 to match the newly created Army rank, although it is actually one grade lower." wikipedia

Built to go over even the roughest terrains and through the most hazardous environments, the Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) is a high-performance, extremely durable, all-terrain vehicle military personnel can rely on. The MTVR easily carries 15 tons over the highway and up to 7 tons off-road. And with advanced technologies like TAK-4® independent suspension and the Command Zone integrated control and diagnostics system, the MTVR has the brawn and the brains to take on any obstacle that attempts to impede the mission. oshkoshdefense

All versions of the MTVR use the same 6x6 configuration. Engine is located under a forward fiberglass bonnet. Roof of the cab with hinged aluminum windscreen and door frames can be folded down to reduce overall height.

It's wide versatility makes the MTVE an integral part of the Marine Corps logistical backbone. This vehicle is the  prime mover for the M777 howitzer, troops, fuel, water and a wide variety of other equipment.
The MTVR truck can be fitted with armor protection kit or armed with a 12.7-mm or 7.82-mm machine gun. Armament sit in a mounted position above the cab.

The Oshkosh MTVR is powered by the Caterpillar C-12 11.9-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 425 hp. It has a full-time all-wheel drive. Vehicle has an independent suspension and is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. The MTVR uses some commercially available driveline components. Some versions of the MTVR are fitted with a 9-ton capacity winch. Vehicle can be airlifted by the C-130 Hercules aircraft (with some preparation) and CH-53 helicopter. military-today.com

Surviving Depression

There are many stories of those who don't survive once they come home and try to live normal lives.

"About one out of every five veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq have some form of PTSD and depression, according to a federal study. Last month (January 2010), the Department of Veterans Affairs said the suicide rate among veterans between 18 and 29 years old climbed 26 percent from 2005 to 2007. The VA also said 20 percent of the 30,000 suicides reported in the U.S. are committed by veterans. The suicide rate among veterans is nearly twice the rate for civilians, according to reports." "Mills Bigham wrote about his first kill in his journal on Oct. 3, just 16 days before he took his own life.Bigham said he wanted to tell the story “so you can understand the way death may or may not affect the living party. “As he approached the fallen attacker, Bigham said he could see “it is abruptly clear he is leaving his world, and soon. 'He is suffocating in his own blood. He is blowing blood bubbles through his red teeth. He is crying. There are bubbles coming from the two holes in his chest. One to the left of his heart, and the other to the right. Death took him and there were no new bubbles. He cried no more. I checked his ID. He is 12. I wept that night.'"
But while PTSD and returning from the field is a dramatic and tragic path into pain and sadness, it is not the only path of depression in the Marine Corps. Simpler, more mundane problems can drive the mental health of these young people. Isolation from their families, family problems and lack of stimulation take their toll as well. Marine leaders are encouraged to be observant and react in a "convincingly and genuinely concerned" manner."

"When a Marine appears depressed, anxious or isolated, it is a red flag that something needs to be done. Getting help before the problem becomes too big can get a depressed or anxious Marine back on track and help unit readiness at the same time."  Leader's guide
Depression takes many forms and has warning signals to watch for. But when it's internalized, blown over and ignored, it can be internally and externally very destructive.

"Darren Evans, the Marine facing charges in the beating death of Lance Cpl. Mario Arias, had been suicidal but allowed to drink by leaders, witnesses said in military hearing Thursday. " Camp Pendleton Dispatch
Ultimately it takes observation, peer support and compassion to identify depression issues in Marines. Vigilance is required on the part of officers, family members and fellow Marines to identify and help those who may need a little support to survive.

“In the combat lifesaver course, one of the things the instructors teach you to do in combat situations is self-aid (providing medical attention to yourself), buddy-aid (assistance from a fellow Marine) and then corpsman-aid (assistance from a Navy corpsman),” said Sgt. James A. Lyon. “When it comes to depression, Marines can’t do it alone. That’s why it’s very important for all Marines to look out for one another.”  Marines protect Marines
