On any project DO NOT expand individual names. Elizth should not be expanded to Elizabeth. You don’t know and are assuming by expanding the name to what you think it would be. Yes it’s commonly known as Elizabeth but I’ve seen it spelled many different ways. Elizebeth is another way. Elizibeth another. How do you know what extra letters are really there in-between the Z and the T? By assuming it’s Elizabeth you’re messing up the index. There’s a reason we’re supposed to type what we see. We’re transcribing these records not interpreting them. Interpreting them is up to the researcher when they look at the records later.
Also don’t give me the well I looked it up on FamilySearch or Ancestry or any other site to verify. How do you know those records are correct in their spelling? They may not be. We are not to be using those sites to verify individual names. Use the handwriting on the rest of the image. If you can’t determine what the letters are then start using ? for one letter you don’t know and * for multiple letters in a row that you don’t know, like we’re supposed to be doing. Share Batch as well and get others opinions. If you absolutely can’t read it then in the end maybe you should be returning it for another indexer to work on and grab a batch that you can read.
