Here’s the batches I’m working on today.

1940 census

Batch #1

• Indexer blanked all residence fields where Same House or Same Place was written in.  Index Same House or Same Place if written in.
• If you’re not sure of a spelling of a location look it up.  The lookup lists are not always correct either or they can have multiple spellings of locations which doesn’t mean one is wrong, sometimes that just means there’s a city spelled the two different ways in more than one state.  The lookups are the same for most of the 1940 census projects.  Use sites such as Google or http://www.hometownlocator.com to verify if you’re not sure.  For example it’s not Centerville, Virginia it’s Centreville, Virginia.  Both are in the lookup.
• Watch your auto fill. If you type too fast it won’t complete the word before you hit enter. 

Batch #2 – This one looks like it’s going to be a doozy!  Red galore!

• Don’t use leading zeros.  1 is 1 not 01, 2 is 2 not 02.
• Middle names are not Title and terms.  They are given names.  Index them with the First name.
• Relationships – If it’s written Wife then index Wife not W.  Complete the words written.
• If Washington DC is in the birth field then it’s indexed as “Washington District of Columbia” not just Washington or Washington DC.  We are to expand abbreviations and type all that is written in the field starting with the lowest location which means city, county, state then country if given.
• If the next line in a family doesn’t have a household number and the household has not changed we are to type the previous household number from the Head of the household. 
• If the next line in a family doesn’t have a surname and the enumerator used a line for ditto or left it blank we are to type in the surname from the previous line.
• Starting to think this batch the Indexer B was a brand new indexer.
• X in a circle is not a title / term.  It meant that that individual was the one to give the enumerator the information.  Just ignore circles with x’s.
• Do not index “ab” if it’s after a name.  It meant that individual was absent at the time.

Well I think this is where I’m going to end this post today.  Got some things to run around and do before heading out of town tomorrow to get the commercial inspection on the van done.   That and that 2nd batch seemed to cover all the rules (or almost all) for the project.
