Main Project Page: http://goo.gl/KX7Gc Updates: http://goo.gl/yJCj0 Additional Help: http://indgensoc.blogspot.com/ or http://www.indgensoc.org/projects/marriage_indexing.php
Project Completion: Updated Last May 10, 2012 Steuben County: 37%
Project Updates:
- Application for Marriage Licences with two records on one image: Application for Marriage Licences with information for the groom on the left page and information for the bride on the right page are to be combined into one record as on all other marriage projects.
- Indexes: Indexes are to be indexed if they contain the names of the bride and groom and the marriage date.
- Medical Records: Medical records are indexed. Information on the same image will be combined into one record.
- Overlays: When an image has one document on top partially covering another document, it is an overlay. For information on what to do with overlays, see 105778 What is an overlay?
- Consent Forms: Index the data that matches the field for the bride and groom, their ages, and a parent's name. No date would be indexed, since there is no field for the date of consent.
- No State or Country Recorded: If not recorded on the image, do not assume the state or country. Tab to the next field, leaving the State or Country field bank.
- By Whom Married Field:
- Style 5--The name listed under the column heading of “By Whom Certified” is the name that goes in the By Whom Married field.
- Style 2--Image one and image two batches have the "By Whom Married" column partially covered by the page on top of it. Do not index the field on image one and image two. Index only the third image, which doesn't have that column partially covered. (See the description of Style 2 images below.)
- Place of Residence Field: When the place of residence is given only as a street address, tab over the residence fields, and leave them empty.
- Place of Marriage Field: When the person performing the marriage states that he is from a certain county, you can put that information in the Place of Marriage field. Also, when the county and state are printed on the marriage portion of the certificate, as in the example below, type those names into the Place of Marriage field. Image Link http://goo.gl/YE25t
- If the printed form says something like “To the Clerk of …” as in the example below, do not assume that the marriage took place in that county. Image Link http://goo.gl/Rq97v
- Bride's Maiden Name Field: The bride's surname does not have a separate field. If the maiden name and the surname are not the same, as is the case for a widow, put both the maiden name and the surname separated by a space in the maiden name field.
- Style 2 images are from ledger record books. The pages in the book were made by putting a narrower sheet of paper on top of a wider sheet of paper alternately throughout the book. A record for one marriage starts on the left side of a wide sheet and continues across both sides of the narrow sheet to the right side of the wide sheet. The information on the left and on the right of the wide sheet was always visible, but the narrow sheet had to be turned to see the information on both sides of it. Image Link http://goo.gl/QNXW6 In the illustration (previous link), the red arrow shows the edges of the narrow sheet when turned to the right. When the narrow sheet was spread open, the book appeared as in the example link after. The arrows show the two edges of the narrow sheet when open. Image Link http://goo.gl/lPaIU When the narrow sheet was turned to the left, it appeared as in the illustration below in link. The arrow shows the edges of the narrow sheet. Notice that you can always see the left and right columns of the record on the wider sheet. The column on the left is the full name of the groom, and the columns on the right are the date of marriage and record number. These appear on every image. Image Link http://goo.gl/BMqAB The record was filmed as in the example above. One record extends over three images. Batches are sent out with only one image and are not a complete record. It is difficult to know in which field to put the data because of not being able to see the complete record, and because the column headings on the image do not specify if it is the groom’s information or the bride’s information. The following chart helps you to identify the information you have on your image. Image Link http://goo.gl/1vROm Index all the information you can from the image in your batch.
Other observations made by indexers / arbitratiors: These are not official and questions / observations should be posted on the wiki if none of the above already cover these.
